A Modern Explorer’s Guide to Cairns with Junko

While the weather is cooling down elsewhere in Australia, Cairns is keeping the summer vibes alive with temperatures still sitting in the mid- to high-20s and plenty of sunny tropical days on the way all winter long.

With less rain and lower humidity, the winter months provide the perfect climate for sightseeing in Cairns. We asked our trusty Tour Desk Agent, Junko, for her top tour recommendations and favourite things to see and do in Cairns during winter.

Junko has been living in Cairns for about 20 years and has worked on the Tour Desk at Pullman Cairns International for over 6 years, so it’s safe to say she’s an expert when it comes to the best tours in town. Check out her top picks below…

Wilderness Eco Safaris

This tour certainly takes you on the road less travelled, far away from the overcrowded tourist spots and deep into the lush, untouched wilderness of Cairn’s World Heritage rainforest.

This eco-sensitive 4WD safari will take you through Barron Gorge National Park, powering up the Great Dividing Range, exploring the Jurassic Park-like surrounds of Dinden National Park, catching glimpses of rare wildlife, chasing waterfalls at Davies Creek Falls and Barron Falls, out to beautiful Trinity Beach, and more.

Wilderness Eco Safaris run on Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, with each tour accommodating up to 7 passengers. There are no set schedules or times on the tour, so the guides will set the pace at your leisure, giving you plenty of time to explore.

Brett’s Outback Tasting Adventures

Attention all avid foodies – this is just the tour for you! Whisking you away to the Atherton Tablelands (also known as the food bowl of North Queensland), this tasting tour will treat you to the very best produce the region has to offer. Sample, sip, and savour local cheeses, tropical fruit, nuts, chocolate, coffee, wine, beer, spirits, seafood, and more.

Feast your eyes on the spectacular landscapes along the way too, as you travel from lush rainforest to ochre savannah plains. Running Tuesday to Saturday, Brett’s Outback Tasting Adventure tours guarantee a truly delicious day for all.

Cairns City Sights & Surrounds

If you’re a first-time visitor to Cairns or you’re looking for a tour that covers all the highlights and iconic landmarks of the city, this tour is one of the best.

With a knowledgeable local guide to share the history, culture, and interesting facts along the way, you’ll visit the stunning St Monica’s Cathedral, Cairns Museum, beautiful Botanical Gardens, scenic lookouts and waterfalls, and the postcard-perfect Palm Cove.

Tours run Monday to Saturday from approximately 12 noon til 6pm.

Silverswift and Silversonic Reef Tours

Since Cairns is blessed with warm tropical water temps all year round, winter is as good a time as any to head out to our breathtaking national treasure, the Great Barrier Reef.

Holding a very special place in Junko’s heart, the Great Barrier Reef is one of her favourite destinations and she believes it is a MUST for anyone visiting Cairns. Junko recommends either the Silverswift or Silversonic Reef Tours, where you can choose to scuba dive or snorkel at three different outer reef sites.

Each tour offers you 5 hours on the reef to swim with exotic tropical fish and marine life, and marvel at all the beauty, colour and life underwater. Locations will vary and are chosen on the day depending on the conditions and where crew believes you’ll get the best experience.

Undara Lava Tubes and Chillagoe Caves

Discover a whole new side of Tropical North Queensland as you explore a maze of underground limestone caves and lava tubes. When Junko is playing tourist in her own town, these two otherworldly experiences are at the top of her list.

Guided tours of the Undara Lava Tubes and Chillagoe Caves both showcase the ancient geographic history of the region and the immenseness of nature. Both sites are located a few hours out of Cairns, but they are well worth the trip. The Undara Lava Tubes and Chillagoe Caves can get very hot during summer, so visiting during the winter months is ideal.
